The Fiji Bitter Wairiki Sevens tournament is gearing up for an exciting event this year, with plans to introduce new initiatives aimed at enhancing the competition. The official launch of both the Fiji Bitter Yasawa Sevens and the Wairiki Sevens took place at the headquarters of Paradise Beverages Fiji Ltd in Suva.
One significant change to this year’s Wairiki Sevens tournament is the addition of under-15 to under-18 categories, which will exclude netball and volleyball. This move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen grassroots player development in the region and foster young talent in rugby.
The tournament is anticipated to feature a total of 32 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams, indicating a robust participation level in the athletic event. Mark Spencer, General Manager of Paradise Beverages, highlighted the importance of a strong partnership that has lasted 17 years, underscoring the ongoing commitment to the sport and the community.
The Nacula Yasawa Sevens is scheduled for December 6-7 at Churchill Park in Lautoka, while the Wairiki Sevens will take place from December 11-14 at the Wairiki grounds in Taveuni.
This year’s focus on youth categories demonstrates a hopeful commitment to nurturing the next generation of rugby players in Fiji, likely leading to a stronger future for the sport in the country.
Overall, the upcoming tournaments reflect the growing enthusiasm for rugby and community building in Fiji, setting the stage for not only competitive sport but also for the development of young athletes who will shape the future of rugby.
