A new career center has been proposed to alleviate the labor shortage in Fiji, spearheaded by Natural Waters of Viti Pte Limited, the company behind FIJI Water. Marigold Moody, the assistant general counsel for the South Pacific, announced this initiative during the Top Executives Conference 2024 held at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Denarau. She emphasized that this project represents a significant investment in Fiji’s workforce.
Moody explained that the proposed career center aims to develop skills and enhance employment opportunities in the region. With approximately 11 vessels operating across the Pacific, there is a pressing need for skilled seafarers in Fiji. FIJI Water recently invested over FJ$140 million to expand its operations, anticipating the need for a more substantial workforce over the next decade as they utilize this increased capacity.
The company plans to collaborate with Fiji National University to establish the career center in Suva, aiming for a launch in 2025. Moody highlighted that their approach would focus on preparing individuals to be job-ready, bridging the current skills gap more effectively. The educational programs developed by their team of specialists will be tailored to meet the demands of businesses.
Furthermore, the initiative hopes to invite other manufacturers and members of the marine industry to participate in this collaborative effort to create a comprehensive career center. Moody’s message underscores a proactive step towards boosting employment and skills development in the region, ultimately contributing to economic progress.
In summary, this initiative reflects a promising commitment to fostering local talent and addressing labor shortages, potentially leading to numerous job opportunities and a stronger economy for Fiji.
