Marist Brothers High School’s Under-17 Rugby League captain, Isimeli Kiso, recognizes the significant responsibility he holds this season in the Fiji Secondary School Rugby League competition, especially as many of his teammates are new to the sport. Kiso is currently the sole member of the team who played in the previous season, making his role crucial in helping the newcomers understand the game’s fundamentals.
Despite their inexperience, the team has achieved back-to-back victories, winning 12-0 against Lomary and 18-4 against Nabua Secondary School. Kiso expressed his gratitude for the performance of his teammates, saying, “A lot of these players have just started training recently because they are playing league for the first time, and I’m thankful they managed to play a good game that earned us the win.”
Inspired by his father, who represented Police and won the Sukuna Bowl in 2017, Kiso views his captaincy as an opportunity for personal growth and in-depth learning about the game. He acknowledges that while this is a new challenge for him, it’s also an enriching experience.
Looking ahead, the competition is set to progress into its third round this Saturday, where Marist Brothers will seek to build on their early successes. The encouraging start to their season highlights the potential for development within the team, fostering a sense of hope for their future matches.
This narrative mirrors the sentiments shared by other schools in the league, such as Naitasiri Secondary School, which is also emphasizing teamwork and discipline as they defend their championship title. The shared challenges and victories among schools not only enhance the spirit of competition but also underscore a united effort in promoting youth athletics across Fiji.
In the face of a competitive landscape, the teamwork and determination displayed by young athletes like Kiso and his teammates foster a hopeful outlook for future engagements in sports, indicating a bright future for Fiji’s rugby landscape.
