New Caledonia Mission Postponed: What’s Next for the Pacific?

The mission led by the Pacific Islands Forum Troika to New Caledonia has been postponed. The Forum Secretariat announced that they have been collaborating with the French State and the New Caledonian Government to ensure the mission’s objectives and arrangements align with the expectations of all stakeholders.

The mission was originally intended to report to Forum Leaders during the 53rd PIF Leaders Meeting in Tonga, which was set to occur this week. However, the New Caledonian Government raised several concerns regarding due process and protocol that must be addressed before the visit can proceed.

To allow for additional time to resolve these concerns from fellow Forum Members, the Troika has decided to delay their mission until after the Leaders’ meeting in Tonga. The situation in New Caledonia will be a topic of discussion at this meeting, providing further guidance for future support.

The Forum remains committed to assisting New Caledonia during this period, including through the Troika-led mission at a mutually agreed time. The mission was requested by New Caledonia’s President Louis Mapou and received approval from the French State.
