New Caledonia secured a place in the semifinals of the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship in Suva by defeating Tahiti 3-1.
The match saw Kinë Hmaen play a pivotal role in New Caledonia’s attack, breaking the deadlock in the 36th minute after capitalizing on a defensive error from Tahiti.
Tahiti attempted to respond immediately but failed to find the equalizer, with Lydie Gendron missing a key opportunity.
After the break, Tahiti had another chance to equalize, but Kunuhei’s attempt was deemed offside. As the second half unfolded, Tahiti pressed for a goal from distance, with captain Maerehia Dehors sending a shot just wide of the mark.
New Caledonia increased their lead in the 69th minute when substitute Bernadette Nyikeine netted a goal, thanks to an excellent setup from Hmaen.
Tahiti managed to score in the 73rd minute, with Vaiuta Pani finishing confidently after beating New Caledonia’s goalkeeper, Elizabeth Aben, in a one-on-one situation.
Nevertheless, despite their late surge, Tahiti could not overcome the deficit. Hmaen capped off the victory for New Caledonia in the 81st minute with a remarkable volley, marking it as one of the tournament’s standout goals and securing a 3-1 triumph for her team.
