The Cabinet has taken significant steps to enhance the preparation and equity of the forthcoming Local Government Elections scheduled for 2026. Among the pivotal decisions is the publication of new By-laws designed to officially incorporate iTaukei villages within municipal boundaries. This change signifies that residents of villages bordering municipalities, including those situated within two kilometers of boundary lines, are now granted the right to engage in local elections.
In addition, the Cabinet has approved Orders that delineate the integration of these incorporated villages into their respective municipal ward areas. Notably, the Nadi Town Wards Extension Order for 2025 has been introduced to specify modifications to ward boundaries within the Nadi municipality.
All By-laws and Orders are set to be gazetted this November 2025. These reforms are part of broader initiatives aimed at improving representation, fostering inclusive participation, and amplifying the voices of local communities in municipal governance. The emphasis on stronger representation, inclusive involvement, and empowered communities lays a promising foundation for a more engaged electorate in the upcoming elections.
