Plans are underway to establish a boxing gym in Labasa aimed at revitalizing both amateur and professional boxing in Vanua Levu. This was highlighted by Samuela Ligairi, special administrator of the Labasa Town Council, during an interview with SUNsports last Saturday.
Ligairi’s remarks followed his attendance at the South Pacific Boxing Promotion event at Subrail Park, marking the return of professional boxing to Labasa after a nine-year hiatus. He stated that the Labasa Town Council is dedicated to restoring the sport by initiating this new project.
The proposed location for the gym will be near the botanical garden at Lions Park, with construction expected to commence shortly. Funding support is anticipated from the Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Boxing Commission of Fiji.
“We will install a boxing ring for training followed by a fully equipped gym,” Ligairi revealed. He noted that the current Nasekula Gym’s limited space necessitates the need for a larger facility to accommodate more sports enthusiasts.
Collaborations between the Labasa Town Council and the Macuata Rugby Union (MRU) are also in place to develop a more expansive gym in the town. The MRU previously assisted in establishing the gym at Nasekula, supported by equipment donations from the Silktails Rugby League Club. Ligairi mentioned that other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are also being invited to contribute to this initiative.
He expressed confidence that the new gym would enhance the finances of the Labasa Town Council while encouraging more individuals to participate in the sport and unlock their potential. Ligairi highlighted that hosting major sporting events, such as the Digicel Fiji FACT football tournament and the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby competition, has revitalized the community in Vanua Levu.
“This initiative takes a comprehensive approach not only benefiting the council but also the local economy, including hoteliers, taxi operators, market vendors, and restaurants that will share in the profits,” he added.
