New Zealand 7s Head Coach Tomasi Cama has welcomed three new players to the squad as preparations begin for the upcoming 2024-25 HSBC SVNS Series. The new additions include Oli Mathis from Waikato and Sofai Maka from North Harbour, alongside Joey Taumateine, who transitions from the New Zealand Men’s Sevens Development team.
Cama expressed enthusiasm about integrating young talent into the team, emphasizing the importance of rapid learning and growth for the newcomers. “As coaches, it excites us to bring young people in and help with their growth,” he stated.
Dylan Collier has been appointed captain, with seasoned players Joe Webber and Sione Molia providing leadership, each bringing over 50 appearances in the black jersey. Cama stressed the team’s commitment to their core values, stating, “We’ve talked a lot about connecting to our DNA.” The focus is on hard work, which he believes will lay the groundwork for an exciting style of rugby that is entertaining and unstructured.
The integration of new talent alongside experienced players signals a dynamic phase for the New Zealand 7s team, as they strive to blend enthusiasm with expertise in their pursuit of success in the upcoming series.
This positive development reflects a commitment to evolving the team’s strategy while fostering the next generation of players, promising an exciting season ahead for both the team and its supporters.
