Opposition MP Jone Usamate highlighted that family breakups are a critical contributor to various societal issues while advocating for the Childcare and Protection Act 2024 in Parliament. He emphasized the importance of parental responsibility outlined in Clause Seven of the Bill, underscoring its potential to address these challenges.

Mr. Usamate stated that the primary focus of the Bill is to promote and safeguard the future of children. He pointed out that ensuring children’s well-being is not solely the responsibility of schools, the Department of Children, or families; it requires a collective effort from everyone in society.

According to him, the passage of this legislation will establish a dedicated Department for Children, which aims to secure a bright future for the younger generation. He believes that when children are provided with the opportunities they deserve, it ultimately contributes to the overall progress and prosperity of the nation.

The Bill, approved by Parliament on December 5, was accompanied by the Child Justice Act. Jonathan Veitch, the UNICEF Pacific representative, expressed his organization’s pride in supporting the development of these Acts. He congratulated the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection for achieving this significant milestone, which demonstrates a strong commitment to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and other international child protection standards.

This legislation represents a crucial step towards ensuring that children are protected and supported, fostering a hopeful environment for the next generation.

By promoting collaborative efforts among various stakeholders, the Childcare and Protection Act 2024 not only addresses pressing issues stemming from family disruptions but also paves the way for a brighter future for children and society as a whole.
