The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) recently conducted an uplifting Talanoa session for Batch 01/2024 recruits at the FCS Training Academy in Naboro, just two weeks shy of their graduation. Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa praised the recruits for their commitment during the demanding 14-week Basic Recruit Training program and urged them to stay resolute as they prepare to step into their roles as Corrections Officers.
During his address, Dr. Nakarawa shared his insights on professionalism, cautioning, “Familiarity breeds contempt,” which underscores the necessity of maintaining professional boundaries with inmates for their safety and the integrity of their duties. He recognized the significant transition that recruits will face, moving from theoretical knowledge to practical application, and encouraged them to remain grounded in their values, particularly in challenging interactions.
The theme of integrity was a focal point of the session, with Dr. Nakarawa emphasizing the consequences of failing to uphold their commitment to service. He motivated recruits to pursue further education and highlighted the importance of strong communication skills in their future careers. The session included an interactive component, allowing recruits to express their inquiries and concerns, promoting open dialogue.
Moreover, Dr. Nakarawa acknowledged four inmates from His Majesty’s Prison in Tonga, who are set to become the first graduates of an accredited Certificate Level 5 in Corrections Management from Fiji National University (FNU). This collaboration with FNU is instrumental in creating educational opportunities for correctional officers, which enhances their skills and contributes to the effectiveness of the corrections system in Fiji.
As the recruits near the end of their training, Dr. Nakarawa encouraged them to prioritize the interests of the FCS and maintain a standard of professionalism, advising them to avoid airing grievances on social media. He concluded the session with best wishes for their success as they approach their crucial roles within the corrections environment.
The proactive initiatives of the Fiji Corrections Service not only reflect a dedication to the training of officers but also signify a broader commitment to enhancing rehabilitation practices within the correctional system, promising a brighter future for corrections in Fiji.
