Thirty-six families recently received occupancy offer letters during the inauguration of the Lagilagi Housing project in Raiwaqa, Suva, marking a significant step in addressing the housing needs of low-income families in the region. This much-anticipated public rental housing initiative aims to accommodate over 1,000 tenants upon its completion, alleviating the critical demand for affordable housing.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who officiated at the event, highlighted the government’s resolve to enhance living conditions for those in need. In a move to further facilitate the project, he mentioned that in January 2024, Cabinet approved the Public Rental Board’s (PRB) role in finishing the 36 incomplete units and managing the overall project. “My colleagues and I are very proud to have been involved in that decision,” Mr. Rabuka stated.
As part of the initiative, the project was transitioned from the People’s Community Network to the PRB to ensure effective management and timely completion. The government intends to wrap up all remaining units by the end of 2024, thereby increasing housing opportunities for families facing hardships.
A recent social survey conducted by the Ministry of Housing at Jittu Estate revealed a pressing demand for housing, showing that 332 houses currently accommodate 1,498 individuals. This underscores the urgency of the Lagilagi Housing project. The completion of Phase 2 brought an additional 36 two-bedroom flats valued at approximately $2.2 million into circulation. So far, the PRB has successfully completed 117 of the planned 153 flats, now housing 162 individuals.
In an effort to support inclusivity, Mr. Rabuka noted that the newly constructed flats feature accessibility designs tailored for tenants with special needs, enabling them to live independently and enjoy an elevated quality of life.
This development is a promising step forward in addressing the housing crisis and demonstrates the government’s commitment to uplifting communities in need. As the project progresses, it heralds a positive change for many families seeking stable housing arrangements and better living conditions.
