The recent inauguration of the $29 million Ba Court complex represents a significant achievement for the judiciary, reflecting the government’s commitment to decentralizing legal services and improving access to justice for citizens. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka was present for the opening, emphasizing the importance of the facility in enhancing the rule of law.

In his remarks, Mr. Rabuka stated, “All citizens have, under the law, the right to seek justice.” This new complex serves as a vital resource, housing modern facilities that aim to alleviate the workload faced by the Ba Court. The establishment of a High Court within the complex means that local litigants can avoid traveling to Lautoka for High Court matters, thereby improving accessibility.

The jurisdiction of the Ba Court covers several towns, including Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki, as well as remote areas such as Bukuya and Magodro. This expansion is seen as a direct effort to enhance the judiciary’s service delivery in the region.

The Prime Minister commended the leadership of Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo for initiating this critical development, underscoring that exercising the right to justice is paramount. The newly opened court will handle appeals for various legal matters, including those from the Central Agricultural Tribunal, civil and criminal cases, and family court appeals.

The event was attended by key figures from the judiciary, government ministers, and other dignitaries, highlighting the collaborative effort involved in this project. Mr. Rabuka further expressed confidence that with united efforts, Fiji can achieve sustainable development and a prosperous future for its citizens.

This development reflects a positive step toward ensuring that justice is not only a right on paper but a practical reality for all citizens, reinforcing the idea that access to legal recourse is essential for a thriving democracy.

Summary: The Ba Court complex, inaugurated by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, signifies the government’s commitment to improving legal access and decentralizing its services. With modern facilities, the new court will serve various legal matters for the local populace, promoting justice and sustainable development in Fiji.
