The recent inauguration of the $29 million Ba Court complex marks a significant step forward for the judiciary in expanding access to legal services at a grassroots level. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka officiated the opening, underscoring the government’s dedication to strengthening the rule of law and ensuring justice is accessible to all citizens.
During his address, Mr. Rabuka emphasized the fundamental right of every citizen to seek justice, highlighting that this new facility symbolizes another major achievement for the community. The complex, representing a modern judicial space, is designed to alleviate the current workload of the Ba Court and will include provisions for a High Court, which will spare litigants from the necessity of traveling to Lautoka for their cases.
The jurisdiction of this new court encompasses the towns of Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki, along with various rural areas, including Bukuya, Magodro, Nadarivatu, and parts of Ra Province. Mr. Rabuka reiterated the Coalition Government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and enhancing access to justice, reminding attendees that the right to pursue justice holds little value unless it is actively exercised.
The event drew attendance from prominent members of the judiciary, ministers, and other dignitaries, showcasing a unified commitment to legal reform. The Ba High Court will now hear appeals related to the Central Agricultural Tribunal, alongside civil, criminal, and family court matters.
Mr. Rabuka praised the judiciary’s strides towards fulfilling its constitutional duties and delivering justice to the public. He encouraged collective efforts to promote sustainable development and foster a prosperous future for Fiji, appealing for a commitment to build a more sustainable and resilient community for upcoming generations.
This new facility represents hope for improved accessibility to legal resources, which can lead to a better informed and empowered citizenry. As judicial services expand, so too does the opportunity for greater justice, transparency, and community engagement—the hallmarks of a thriving democracy.
