FIJI Airways announced a significant milestone with the successful arrival of Fiji Link’s newest ATR aircraft at Nadi. The ATR 72-600 landed on January 7 after a multi-day ferry journey that began in Toulouse, France.
The aircraft traveled a long route, passing through multiple countries including Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, India, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands before arriving in Fiji. This addition strengthens Fiji Link’s commitment to enhancing domestic and regional connectivity, especially for remote communities and inter-island travel, a vital aspect for economic activity in Fiji’s outer islands.
Since its inception, Fiji Link has evolved from operating small turboprop planes to a modern fleet that meets the needs of both residents and international travelers. The arrival of this new ATR signifies an exciting new chapter for the airline.
In a brief interview with The Fiji Times, Fiji Airways elaborated on the aircraft’s acquisition details. The market price for a new ATR 72-600 is approximately USD $26 million, although Fiji Airways opted for a 12-year operating lease rather than an outright purchase. This strategic leasing arrangement allows the airline to manage its capital expenditure while ensuring fleet modernization and operational efficiency.
The aircraft was sourced directly from ATR in France, where it underwent standard manufacturing, testing, and certification processes before being formally accepted by Fiji Airways. The delivery was managed by Focus Aero, a contracted ferry company equipped with its own qualified crew to meet regulatory and operational standards.
Before entering service, the aircraft will undergo several final preparations, including modifications to meet Fiji Link’s operational requirements, crew familiarization with the aircraft, and necessary maintenance checks to ensure all systems comply with safety and performance standards.
The new ATR 72-600 boasts state-of-the-art Pratt & Whitney engines, enhancing fuel efficiency and significantly lowering noise levels compared to older models. Additionally, the cabin is designed with some of the lightest and most comfortable seating available for turboprop aircraft, prioritizing passenger comfort and aircraft performance.
Fiji Airways and Fiji Link remain committed to investing in modern, reliable, and sustainable aircraft to enhance regional connectivity and improve the travel experience for all passengers. This latest acquisition not only bolsters the airline’s operational capabilities but also promises to elevate the journey for travelers across Fiji.
