New Appointment Sparks Hope for Fiji’s Electoral Integrity

The Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) has authorized the appointment of Ami Kohli as a member of the Electoral Commission, a decision confirmed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who chairs the COC. This appointment is executed in alignment with section 75(7) of the Constitution, following a recommendation from the COC to the President.

Prime Minister Rabuka praised Kohli for his extensive legal experience, highlighting his current role as Principal at the law firm Kohli & Singh in Labasa. Kohli’s academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of the South Pacific and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Otago. His legal career spans various roles, including partnerships and solo practice, before his notable contributions from 1996 to 2019 alongside Raman Pratap Singh.

In addition to his legal achievements, Kohli has been involved in significant community leadership roles, such as with Labasa Soccer, Labasa Golf Club, and the Festival of Friendly North Association, where he currently serves as trustee. He previously chaired the Labasa Hospital Board of Visitors, positively influencing hospital developments.

This new role for Kohli comes at a crucial time for the Electoral Commission, supporting the stability and integrity of Fiji’s electoral process. The immediate effect of this appointment underscores the government’s commitment to appointing qualified individuals to vital positions that promote good governance.

This decision reflects a broader trend within the COC to enhance institutional credibility and accountability, a sentiment echoed in previous discussions about the commission’s role in appointing key public positions. The recent allocation of $200,000 to the COC from the 2024-2025 National Budget also indicates a commitment to strengthening this essential institution.

Kohli’s appointment is a hopeful development, promoting the expertise needed within the Electoral Commission as Fiji navigates its electoral landscape. His diverse background and community involvement signal a positive influence in fostering trustworthy electoral practices.
