The National Fire Authority (NFA) has officially launched its Paramedics Ambulance Department and badged new paramedics at its headquarters in Suva. This new initiative aims to enhance the handling of medical emergencies and ensure effective use of government funding, which was previously mismanaged when operational officers were in charge.

According to NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane, the establishment of the paramedics department will facilitate better training for professionals in emergency medical situations. The department will be led by a newly appointed manager paramedic, and a dedicated area within the fire station is being developed into a paramedic center. Currently, while there are no specialized paramedics, some firefighters have received training through the Ministry of Health.

The new Emergency Ambulance and Paramedic Health Services Department will provide critical support to both victims and firefighters during emergency incidents, particularly in fire scenarios. When responding to such incidents, paramedics will be on standby to assist those affected.

Currently, the NFA operates nine ambulances, with plans to introduce six additional paramedic ambulances to enhance their response capabilities. These specially designed ambulances will not only transport patients but are also equipped with pre-hospital emergency care features.

In his concluding remarks, Sowane urged the community to exercise caution during the festive season to prevent fire incidents.

This initiative marks a significant step in improving emergency medical services in the region, promising enhanced care for those in crisis and a better-prepared response team.
