Parmesh Chand’s recent appointment as Fiji’s ambassador to Japan marks a significant development in enhancing the bilateral relations between the two countries. According to Dr. Ram Raju, president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI), this diplomatic transition is poised to strengthen the amicable ties that have existed since the establishment of formal relations in 1970.
Chand, who currently serves as the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Service, will take over the role from Filimoni Waqabaca, who returns to Fiji to become the chief executive officer of the Fiji Development Bank. Dr. Raju emphasized that Chand’s new position could unlock further opportunities for cooperation across various sectors including trade, tourism, education, and humanitarian aid.
Dr. Raju commended Japan for its ongoing support through scholarships for Fijian students and its valuable assistance during national disasters, particularly through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Notably, JICA has played a critical role in addressing the impacts of flooding in Nadi, which has had a positive effect on local communities.
Additionally, Fiji has been engaging with Japan by hosting students who wish to improve their English and pursue other educational opportunities. Dr. Raju expressed confidence that under Chand’s stewardship, Fiji will promote unique products like spices, pearls, and agricultural goods to the discerning Japanese market.
In a show of support, the NCCI plans to invite Chand to meet its members before he officially begins his duties in Japan. Dr. Raju also extended his congratulations to Waqabaca, expressing belief in his ability to lead the Fiji Development Bank towards economic growth.
The appointment heralds a hopeful chapter for Fiji’s diplomatic engagement with Japan, suggesting enhanced cooperation that could yield mutual benefits and prosperity for both nations. With Chand’s expertise and the established goodwill between Fiji and Japan, there are promising prospects for deeper collaboration and growth in the future.
