Parmesh Chand has officially been appointed as Fiji’s new ambassador to Japan, a transition that is expected to further enhance the longstanding relations between the two nations. Dr. Ram Raju, president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI), has expressed optimistic expectations regarding this appointment, emphasizing the positive and cordial ties that have existed since Fiji and Japan established official diplomatic relations in 1970.

Chand, who currently serves as the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Service, will succeed Filimoni Waqabaca. Waqabaca is transitioning back to Fiji to take on the role of chief executive officer at the Fiji Development Bank. Dr. Raju has noted that this new position will present opportunities for increased collaboration between the countries across various sectors, including trade, tourism, human resources development, and educational exchanges.

Japan, known as a global economic powerhouse, plays a crucial role in supporting Fiji, particularly through scholarships for Fijian students and vital assistance during national disasters, primarily facilitated through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Dr. Raju highlighted JICA’s significant contributions in addressing flooding issues in Nadi, which have positively impacted local communities.

In addition to this aid, Fiji is also committed to fostering educational opportunities for Japanese students, who come to enhance their English language skills and academic knowledge in various subjects. Dr. Raju is confident that during his term, Mr. Chand will actively promote Fijian niche products, such as spices, pearls, and agricultural goods in the discerning Japanese market.

As a gesture of goodwill, NCCI plans to invite Chand to meet its members before he embarks on his new role, reinforcing the community’s support for this diplomatic transition. Furthermore, Dr. Raju has offered congratulations to Waqabaca on his new leadership role at FDB, expressing confidence in his ability to contribute to Fiji’s economic growth.

This diplomatic appointment is seen as an encouraging step for both Fiji and Japan, as they continue to seek deeper collaboration and mutual benefits. There is a hopeful outlook for the future, with many expecting that these enhanced relationships will lead to shared prosperity for both nations.
