The recent appointment of Parmesh Chand as Fiji’s new ambassador to Japan is viewed as a significant opportunity to strengthen the long-standing bilateral ties between the two nations. Dr. Ram Raju, president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI), expressed optimism about this development, highlighting the cordial relationship that has existed since the official diplomatic ties were established in 1970.
Chand, who currently serves as the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Service, succeeds Filimoni Waqabaca, who is returning to Fiji to lead the Fiji Development Bank. Dr. Raju noted that this transition could open new avenues for collaboration in crucial sectors such as trade, tourism, human resources development, and humanitarian assistance.
Japan is acknowledged as an economic powerhouse, and Dr. Raju commended the support it has extended to Fiji, including scholarships for Fijian students and assistance during national disasters, mainly through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He particularly noted JICA’s significant role in providing solutions during flooding disasters in Nadi, which have positively affected local communities.
Fiji also plays its part by hosting Japanese students who come to improve their English and engage in other academic pursuits. Dr. Raju is confident that during his tenure, Chand will effectively promote Fijian niche products such as spices, pearls, and various agricultural goods to the discerning Japanese market.
In a gesture of community support, the NCCI plans to invite Chand to meet its members before he officially begins his duties in Japan. Dr. Raju also extended congratulations to Waqabaca on his new appointment, expressing faith in his ability to drive economic growth at the Fiji Development Bank.
Overall, this ambassadorial appointment signifies a hopeful chapter for Fiji’s diplomatic engagement with Japan. It not only provides an opportunity for enhanced cooperation but also the potential for shared prosperity and mutual benefits for both nations. With Chand’s expertise and the ongoing goodwill between the two countries, there are promising prospects for strengthening international partnerships and driving growth in various sectors.
