The appointment of Parmesh Chand as Fiji’s new ambassador to Japan is expected to bolster the long-standing ties between the two nations, according to Dr. Ram Raju, the president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI). Chand, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Service, takes over from Filimoni Waqabaca, who will return to Fiji as the chief executive officer of the Fiji Development Bank.
Since establishing official diplomatic relations in 1970, Fiji and Japan have maintained a cordial relationship characterized by significant trade and cooperation. Dr. Raju expressed optimism that Chand’s appointment will promote even greater collaboration in areas such as trade, tourism, and human resources development.
Japan’s role as an economic powerhouse provides valuable opportunities for Fiji, and Dr. Raju commended Japan for its contributions, including offering various scholarships for Fijian students and providing assistance during national disasters through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He highlighted JICA’s involvement in mitigating flooding disasters in Nadi by offering expert solutions, which have made a positive impact.
In addition to these supportive initiatives, Fiji contributes to educational exchanges by hosting Japanese students who study English and other subjects in the country. Dr. Raju believes Chand will be instrumental in promoting unique Fijian products—such as spices, pearls, and agricultural goods—to the discerning Japanese market.
As a gesture of goodwill, the NCCI plans to invite Chand to meet with its members before he embarks on his new role. Dr. Raju also took the opportunity to congratulate Waqabaca on his new position, expressing confidence that his leadership will contribute to the economic prosperity of Fiji.
Overall, this ambassadorial transition signifies a commitment to strengthening diplomatic relationships and enhancing international collaboration. With Chand’s experience and enthusiasm, there is a hopeful outlook for deeper cooperation and shared benefits for both Fiji and Japan, fostering a fruitful partnership that could lead to mutual growth.
