Parmesh Chand has been appointed as Fiji’s new ambassador to Japan, a move expected to further strengthen the longstanding relationship between the two nations. Dr. Ram Raju, president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI), expressed his optimism about this transition, emphasizing the warm ties that have existed since 1970 when diplomatic relations were formally established.
Chand, who is currently the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Service, will be succeeding Ambassador Filimoni Waqabaca, who is set to return home to take on the role of chief executive officer at the Fiji Development Bank (FDB). Dr. Raju highlighted that Chand’s appointment could enable increased cooperation in pivotal sectors such as trade, tourism, human resources development, and humanitarian aid.
Japan, noted for its economic strength, has routinely provided scholarships to Fijian students and has played a vital role in disaster relief efforts, primarily through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Dr. Raju commended JICA’s significant contributions during flooding disasters in Nadi, which have helped mitigate the impact on local communities.
In response to this favorable relationship, Fiji is actively working to provide educational opportunities for Japanese students seeking to enhance their English and other academic skills. Dr. Raju is confident that during his tenure, Chand will effectively market unique Fijian products, including spices, pearls, and various agricultural goods, to the demanding Japanese market.
As a sign of community support, the NCCI plans to invite Chand to meet with its members before he officially begins his ambassadorial duties in Japan. Dr. Raju also congratulated Waqabaca on his new position, expressing optimism that his leadership will contribute to continued economic growth in Fiji.
This appointment signifies a promising future for Fiji and Japan, aimed at deepening collaborative opportunities and generating mutual benefits. With Chand’s extensive experience and the strong existing goodwill between the two countries, there are encouraging prospects for enhanced cooperation and prosperity in various sectors moving forward.
