Parmesh Chand has been appointed as Fiji’s next ambassador to Japan in a move that is expected to further strengthen ties between the two nations. Dr. Ram Raju, president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, expressed optimism about this appointment, highlighting the longstanding and amicable relationship between Fiji and Japan, which has been in place since 1970.
Chand, who currently serves as the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Service, will succeed Filimoni Waqabaca, who is returning to Fiji to become the chief executive officer of the Fiji Development Bank. Dr. Raju noted that Chand’s new role could enhance cooperation in various sectors, including trade, tourism, education, and humanitarian aid.
Japan, recognized as an economic powerhouse, provides numerous scholarships annually to Fijian students and plays a vital role during national disasters through its assistance and the efforts of volunteers under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Dr. Raju acknowledged JICA’s important contributions, particularly regarding solutions for flooding disasters in Nadi.
As Fiji continues to engage with Japan, there are high hopes that Chand will effectively promote Fiji’s distinctive products, such as spices, noni products, pearls, and agricultural goods, in the sensitive Japanese market. This exchange will also see Japanese students benefiting from English language and specialized education offered in Fiji.
In addition to congratulating Chand, Dr. Raju expressed good wishes to Waqabaca on his new position, underscoring the transformative period for Fiji’s public service and the potential economic growth that can arise from strengthened international partnerships.
Overall, this appointment could mark a significant leap forward for Fiji’s diplomatic relations, promising enhanced collaborations that could result in beneficial outcomes for both nations. The future looks bright as Fiji strives to solidify its global presence and foster meaningful connections internationally.
