Vunilagi has been recognized as a potential entry point in Vanua Levu, as reported by aviation sources. The paramount chief of Cakaudrove and Parliament Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has offered land for the development of a new airport at Vunilagi, generating excitement among local business leaders about the project’s future.
Savusavu Chamber of Commerce president Avikash Pillay is one of many in the business community who are optimistic about the initiative. He noted, “Vunilagi is approximately a 30-minute drive from Savusavu Town and features ample flat land.” Pillay pointed out that the current Savusavu Airport runway poses limitations for larger aircraft, which hinders the tourism industry’s growth.
As the leading tourist destination in the Northern Division, the construction of a larger airport could attract more visitors. Pillay mentioned that government officials are also examining the possibility of establishing an airport at Vunilagi.
In addition, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka highlighted Nasarawaqa in Bua as another potential location for an international airport last year. However, following the launch of the NaVualiku tourism development project, other sites have also been considered by The World Bank. Gavoka stated, “As a government, we are aware of the people’s demand for an international airport, and we are actively looking into it. An announcement is expected by the end of the year.”
