Vunilagi has emerged as a potential entry point for aviation in Vanua Levu, according to industry insiders. Following the offer of land for a new airport by Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the paramount chief of Cakaudrove and current Parliament Speaker, many local business leaders are optimistic that this project will materialize.

Savusavu Chamber of Commerce president Avikash Pillay is one of those hopeful about the development. He noted, “Vunilagi is approximately a 30-minute drive from Savusavu Town and features ample flat land.” He explained that the current runway at Savusavu Airport is inadequately sized for larger aircraft, which poses ongoing challenges for the tourism sector.

As the main tourist hub in the Northern Division, a larger airport could significantly boost tourist arrivals. Pillay mentioned that government officials are also evaluating the feasibility of constructing an airport in Vunilagi.

In an alternative consideration, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka previously identified Nasarawaqa in Bua as another possible location for an international airport. He indicated that since the NaVualiku tourism development project was launched, the World Bank has pinpointed other potential sites as well. “We understand the community’s need for an international airport, and we are actively exploring this,” Gavoka stated, adding that an announcement is expected by the end of the year.
