New Airport Hopes Rise in Vunilagi for Vanua Levu’s Tourism Boost

Vunilagi has emerged as a potential port of entry in Vanua Levu, as indicated by sources within the aviation sector. Following the offer of land for a new airport by Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the paramount chief of Cakaudrove and Speaker of Parliament, local business stakeholders are optimistic about the project’s feasibility.

Avikash Pillay, president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce, expressed support for the development, noting that Vunilagi is only a 30-minute drive from Savusavu Town and has ample flat land. He pointed out the limitations of the existing Savusavu Airport, which cannot accommodate larger aircraft due to space constraints—an issue that continues to hinder tourism growth in the area.

As the leading tourist destination in the Northern Division, a larger airport could significantly increase tourist arrivals, Pillay added. Government ministers are reportedly considering the development of Vunilagi Airport as part of this initiative.

In addition to Vunilagi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka mentioned Nasarawaqa in Bua as another potential site for an international airport last year. He also noted that, due to the NaVualiku tourism development project, The World Bank has identified other possible locations. Gavoka emphasized the government’s awareness of the community’s desire for an international airport and assured that an announcement would be made by the end of the year.
