Netflix is set to enter the realm of live programming this Monday with the premiere of “Raw,” a weekly showcase from World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) that has captivated American audiences for three decades. The WWE is transitioning its flagship show from the Comcast-run USA Network to Netflix, aiming to attract a broader, global fan base.

WWE President Nick Khan expressed enthusiasm about this new partnership, stating that the collaboration was a natural fit given Netflix’s extensive reach and recognizable brand. The streaming giant has committed over $5 billion for exclusive rights to “Raw,” “Smackdown,” and “Wrestlemania” for a decade, marking a strategic move into live events that appeal to advertisers.

WWE’s roster, featuring iconic figures such as Hulk Hogan and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, has contributed to its enduring popularity. Bela Bejaria, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, shared her nostalgic experience of watching wrestling with her grandfather, indicating that this multi-generational interest is a key component of WWE’s success. With over 1 billion followers across social media platforms, the potential for combining WWE’s passionate fanbase with Netflix’s vast audience is significant.

“Raw” will be available for live streaming every Monday on Netflix in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and other regions, with plans for a broader international rollout, including India next April. Furthermore, WWE is planning to increase its live events in global markets and discover new superstars by 2025.

The inaugural live episode will take place outside Los Angeles, featuring well-known wrestlers such as John Cena, Roman Reigns, and Cody Rhodes. WWE’s commitment to broadcasting 52 weeks a year illustrates a substantial increase from Netflix’s previous live event offerings.
