The Fiji Primary and Secondary School Netball Associations have received substantial financial support from Goodman Fielder Fiji, enabling the continuation of grassroots netball tournaments across the country. This partnership, which began last year with a $35,000 sponsorship, has significantly impacted various operational aspects, including venue costs and the expansion of prize money from $300 to an impressive $1,000.
Navitalai Naivalu, the President of the Fiji Secondary Schools Netball Association, emphasized the crucial timing of this financial boost, which will ensure smooth execution of events, such as zone meets and national championships. Naivalu expressed optimism regarding the future of secondary school netball, stating that the current structure, alongside primary school pathways, could lead to even greater participation numbers. Last year, 66 schools were involved, and this year, the national competition will feature 144 schools across three venues.
Goodman Fielder Fiji’s General Manager, Tim Carter, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to grassroots netball development, stating that the partnership aims to nurture young talents with aspirations to represent Fiji at high-level competitions. This sponsorship also extended to providing essential nutritional support, including free chicken and eggs to schools from outer islands, which was warmly welcomed by those receiving aid for the first time.
As the Fiji Primary School Competitions are set to commence on August 29 in Sigatoka, the boost from Goodman Fielder reflects a growing effort to invest in and enhance the sporting landscape for Fiji’s youth. This initiative not only nurtures local talent but also establishes a stronger foundation for the future of netball in the country.
The involvement of corporate partners like Goodman Fielder Fiji can be seen as a beacon of hope for youth sports, demonstrating the potential for community growth and development through grassroots efforts. By continuing this trajectory, there is optimism that the next generation of athletes will flourish and contribute to Fiji’s representation on international stages.
