The netball community is in mourning following the death of Wainikiti “Kiti” Bogidrau, who served as the former President of Netball Fiji and the Oceania Regional Netball Director. Kiti passed away on Tuesday after a brief period of illness.

A respected figure, Kiti dedicated her life to the sport, profoundly influencing netball in Fiji and beyond. Tributes flowing in from organizations like Oceania Netball, World Netball, and Tonga Netball showcase her legacy as a mentor and a trailblazer for women in sports, emphasizing her role in fostering growth and unity within the game.

Nicola Jones from Oceania Netball described Kiti as an inspirational leader whose commitment and passion have left a lasting legacy, inspiring the netball community to strive for excellence. Salote Sisifa, CEO of Tonga Netball, shared heartfelt memories of Kiti’s generosity and mentorship. Kiti was not only a mentor but also a cherished friend who guided Sisifa during her transition into netball leadership.

Kiti’s contributions over two decades in netball administration were profound. She held significant positions, including the presidency of Netball Fiji from 2010 to 2020, before taking on regional and global roles that made her an integral part of the sport’s development in Oceania.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Kiti was a devoted family member, deeply rooted in her community. Her brother Sevuloni Waqa captured her essence, highlighting her dedication to family and faith. “She was present for every family milestone, every birthday, every success,” Waqa fondly recalled.

Before her influential role in netball, Kiti made a name for herself in journalism, exemplifying hard work and determination. Iliesa Tora, a colleague from The Fiji Times, noted her remarkable ability to break significant stories, which greatly strengthened the newsroom.

Kiti’s inspiring journey from journalism to a transformative leader in netball demonstrates her remarkable impact on the sport and her contributions in empowering women and communities across Oceania.

World Netball extended its condolences, celebrating her positive influence. Her funeral is set for next Friday, where she will be laid to rest at Nasinu cemetery.

In a positive light, Kiti’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of netball players and leaders, reminding us all of the vital role that passion and mentorship play in the development of sports and communities.
