In an effort to modernize and enhance its governance framework, Netball Fiji has initiated a significant constitutional reform project. This initiative is designed to ensure that the organization’s governing document stays relevant and effectively meets the needs of both current and future stakeholders in the sport.
The current executive board has prioritized improving governance following a turbulent period marked by internal disputes among member associations, as revealed in previous reports. A recent grant from World Netball’s Strategic Development Fund, awarded to only five federations worldwide in 2024, has further invigorated this reform effort. The funding is specifically aimed at supporting national federations in their pursuit of constitutional improvements.
The reformation process commenced with an orientation meeting held on July 19 at the Fiji National Sports Commission (FNSC) Board Room in Suva, where all presidents from Netball Fiji’s member associations were invited, including those who had voiced concerns in earlier gatherings. The goal is to unite the netball community, as emphasized by President RubyAnn Sorovaki, who underscored the project’s vital importance for fostering collaboration and improving the sport at all levels.
During the orientation, a Constitutional Review Working Group was established to encompass a representative mix of associations. This group will facilitate an inclusive approach by allowing all member associations to contribute formal submissions, ensuring that all voices are acknowledged in shaping the new governance structure.
This reform initiative comes after a series of challenges faced by Netball Fiji, including dissatisfaction with the governance structure and the performance of the national team, the Fiji Pearls. Previous reports highlighted issues of leadership effectiveness and mismanagement, resulting in wider calls for a comprehensive review of practices to enhance transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness.
Stakeholders are hopeful that this initiative could serve as a turning point for netball in Fiji, revitalizing both the governance framework and grassroots development. By addressing governance shortcomings, Netball Fiji aims to build a stronger foundation for the sport, fostering a more engaged and cooperative environment among its member associations. As discussions evolve, the optimism shared among stakeholders suggests a collective commitment towards revitalizing netball and ensuring sustainable growth for the future.
