A Special General Meeting (SGM) is set to be convened by Netball Fiji to review the organization’s constitution, as confirmed by President RubyAnn Sorovaki following the recent Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Tanoa Plaza in Suva. The specific date for the SGM is yet to be announced.
The initiative for the SGM was proposed by the Suva Netball Association (SNA). Sorovaki noted that the AGM included extensive discussions regarding significant issues in netball, including concerns raised by districts about levies, development programs, and the constitution review.
She emphasized the importance of effective communication and collaboration among all parties involved in the sport. “An important part was information sharing, which I think is becoming a major issue with us, and we all agreed,” Sorovaki stated. She highlighted that misinformation has prompted unnecessary questions, despite solutions already being in place for some issues.
The discussions also delved into the development programs and the performance of the Fiji Pearls, with Sorovaki acknowledging that while there is much work to be done, restructuring should not be an immediate fix. “There’s a lot of contributing factors and the presidents’ were made aware what they need to be doing to ensure that the Pearls are performing well. We are working together on the other things that are related to their performance,” she added.
Financial reports for Netball Fiji were approved at the AGM, and Sorovaki encouraged district presidents to consult with the organization whenever uncertain or in need of assistance.
SNA president Alumeci Sachs expressed regret for the lack of time to discuss their remit in detail, highlighting that the review of the constitution is a vital step towards ensuring good governance benefits all district presidents in Fiji. Mere Rauluni, president of Nasinu, echoed support for the remit, emphasizing the need for inclusive voting processes, while Salote Dorothy Prasad from Lautoka netball expressed optimism for constitutional changes that would address concerns voiced by districts.
This meeting represents a concerted effort towards reform and improving the governance of netball in Fiji, fostering a more democratic and participatory environment among the various associations. The pathway forward is bright, with stakeholders demonstrating a unified interest in enhancing the overall landscape of the sport in the region.
