Netball Fiji is planning to hold a Special General Meeting (SGM) to review its constitution, as confirmed by President RubyAnn Sorovaki after the recent Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Suva. The exact date for the SGM has yet to be announced.

The proposal for the SGM came from the Suva Netball Association (SNA) and underscores a commitment to addressing pressing issues within the sport. During the AGM, various concerns were raised by district representatives regarding levies, development programs, and the need for a constitutional review. Sorovaki stressed the significance of effective communication and cooperation among all stakeholders involved in netball.

“An important part was information sharing, which I think is becoming a major issue with us, and we all agreed,” she noted. Sorovaki pointed out that misinformation has led to unnecessary confusion, even when solutions to some issues have already been identified.

Additionally, the AGM covered topics such as the performance of the Fiji Pearls and ongoing development programs. Sorovaki acknowledged that while improvements are necessary, quick fixes are not the answer. She emphasized that the district presidents need to be proactive in their roles to support the team’s performance.

Financial reports from Netball Fiji were approved during the AGM, and Sorovaki encouraged district leaders to reach out for guidance whenever they have uncertainties.

The SNA president, Alumeci Sachs, expressed disappointment over the limited time available to delve deeper into their agenda, calling the constitutional review an essential step for good governance that benefits all district presidents throughout Fiji. Support for these changes was echoed by Mere Rauluni, president of Nasinu, who highlighted the need for inclusive voting processes. Salote Dorothy Prasad from Lautoka netball also shared a hopeful outlook for constitutional adjustments that address the concerns of the districts.

This upcoming SGM signifies a proactive move toward reforming and improving the governance of netball in Fiji, with a unified effort toward creating a more democratic and engaging environment for all associations involved. The collective determination shown by stakeholders indicates a promising future for netball in the region.
