Netball Fiji is experiencing significant disruption as 15 out of 19 member associations boycotted a Special General Meeting (SGM) in protest against the organization’s leadership. Among the dissenting voices is Alumeci Sachs, president of the Suva Netball Association, who has indicated that the associations will disaffiliate and seek legal advice. They plan to inform World Netball and the Ministry of Justice about their actions, underscoring their dissatisfaction with key governance issues, including national team management, constitutional compliance, and voting rights.
Sachs emphasized the belief that Netball Fiji cannot operate effectively without the participation of these prominent associations, which include major bodies such as Suva and Lautoka, as well as Fiji Secondary Schools and Fiji Primary. Ruby Ann Sorovaki, the president of Netball Fiji, acknowledged these concerns, stating that she needs to consult with stakeholders to find a way forward, asserting that the motions raised do not contravene the Constitution.
This situation follows previous calls from various netball association leaders for improved governance within Netball Fiji. A motion of no confidence against Sorovaki and her executive committee had previously been initiated, highlighting dissatisfaction with financial transparency and the handling of the national team, which has seen a decline in performance, currently ranked 16th globally and failing to qualify for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The leadership’s perceived inadequacies have compounded growing discontent around sponsorship opportunities and support for grassroots initiatives.
Despite these challenges, there is optimism within the netball community regarding potential reforms. Stakeholders hope the upcoming SGM will be a turning point for netball in Fiji, fostering constructive dialogue and collaboration. Improvements to transparency and governance practices could ignite a renewed spirit within the sport, nurturing the growth and development of netball at all levels.
As leaders advocate for enhanced systems and avenues to support players and associations alike, this juncture holds promise for revitalizing Fiji’s netball scene and fostering a stronger future for the sport.
