There is a growing need to enhance local netball competitions this year, as highlighted by Netball Fiji president RubyAnn Sorovaki. Speaking about potential areas for improvement within the sport, Sorovaki emphasized that strengthening national tournaments is crucial for the selection process of the wider training squad for upcoming national teams.

Sorovaki stated, “We need to intensify our competitions to allow for selection of players into the high-performance teams.” She stressed the importance of having clear pathways from club competitions to national competitions to ensure that quality games are played, thus broadening the selection criteria at all levels.

She also noted that grassroots development will play a pivotal role in this initiative, and the federation is committed to collaborating with all stakeholders involved. “Our focus remains on assisting our districts in running games and enhancing the capacities of our members,” she added.

Additionally, the Fiji Pearls extended squad will regroup for fitness testing today at the HPU Gym in Laucala, starting at 8:30 am. The extended squad consists of 56 players who will be coached by interim Pearls head coach Jioweli Vakamoce.

This commitment to local competitions and player development not only strengthens the overall framework of netball in Fiji but also fosters a supportive environment for emerging talent. The focus on grassroots efforts and collaboration among stakeholders assures that the sport is poised for growth and success in the future.

In summary, Netball Fiji is taking significant steps to enhance the competitive landscape of the sport, ensuring that there are ample opportunities for players at all levels to showcase their skills and potentially represent their country on an international stage. Such proactive measures are vital for the continued development and popularity of netball in the region.
