The International Netball Festival has made a vibrant return to Lautoka, featuring an assembly of 36 teams from Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand. This week-long event is not just about thrilling matches but also emphasizes cultural exchange among the participants.

As the finals approach on Tuesday, excitement is building among players and fans alike. International Netball Co-Coordinator, Nick Rushton, praised Fiji’s appeal as a festival destination, stating, “We host four festivals a year, and we’ve always returned to Fiji in December because it’s such a beautiful part of the world.” He highlighted that teams come to engage in netball while absorbing the local culture, aiming to create unforgettable memories.

The tournament includes four competitive grades: U13, U15, U18, and Open categories, with teams from diverse regions including Yasawa and various parts of Fiji, alongside international representatives. Matches have already showcased spectacular performances, such as Shine On Queens’ impressive 19-3 win against Aussie Hino, and their continued success with an 18-11 victory over Bradford Hotel Aussie Opens. Another notable match featured Lomaiviti Stars narrowly losing to Rockhampton Grammar in a close 19-17 contest.

Rushton emphasized that the festival extends beyond sports, offering participants a rich nine-day experience, of which four days focus on netball while the remaining days allow them to explore Fiji’s unique cultural landscape. Notably, teams from Australia and New Zealand also contributed donations to local teams, reflecting a strong sense of generosity and community spirit.

He concluded, “We want the girls to understand different cultures and lifestyles. It’s not just about competition; it’s about interaction, learning, and building connections”. This sentiment captures the essence of the festival—cultivating relationships through sport while fostering an enriched understanding of diverse cultures.

The festival serves as a reminder of the power of sport to unite people, create lasting bonds, and facilitate cultural understanding. This gathering not only celebrates athleticism but also cherishes shared experiences, making it a truly enriching event for all involved.
