The International Netball Festival has made its vibrant return to Lautoka, showcasing an impressive gathering of 36 teams from Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand for a week filled with thrilling matches and cultural experiences. The finals are scheduled for Tuesday, promising both exhilarating netball competition and unforgettable moments for participants and spectators alike.

Nick Rushton, the International Netball Co-Coordinator, emphasized Fiji’s unique appeal as a host for the festival. He remarked, “We host four festivals a year, and we’ve always returned to Fiji in December because it’s such a beautiful part of the world.” Rushton further highlighted that these festivals allow teams not only to engage in competitive netball but also to immerse themselves in the rich local culture, creating lasting memories.

The festival includes four competitive grades: U13, U15, U18, and Open categories. Teams hailing from various regions in Fiji, along with international squads, are actively participating. The matches have already delivered exciting moments; for instance, the Shine On Queens claimed a decisive 19-3 victory against Aussie Hino and continued their success with an 18-11 win over the Bradford Hotel Aussie Opens. Meanwhile, the Lomaiviti Stars faced a nail-biting 19-17 loss against Rockhampton Grammar, and the Silverettes rebounded with an 11-7 win over Burnie Diamonds.

Rushton explained that the festival extends beyond sports alone. “The girls come for a nine-day tour, and four days are dedicated to netball. The rest of the time, they experience Fiji’s unique culture,” he noted. Teams from Australia and New Zealand also contributed to local teams through donations, reinforcing a sense of community and goodwill.

“We want the girls to understand different cultures and lifestyles. It’s not just about competition; it’s about interaction, learning, and building connections,” Rushton concluded.

This celebration of sports and culture not only highlights the talent of young athletes but also fosters international camaraderie and appreciation for diverse traditions. As the festival unfolds, it showcases the spirit of unity and shared experiences, offering hope for future collaborations between these nations.

Summary: The International Netball Festival in Lautoka features 36 teams from Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand, emphasizing sportsmanship and cultural exchange. With exciting matches and opportunities for cultural immersion, the festival promotes long-lasting relationships among players and teams.
