The International Netball Festival has made its much-anticipated return to Lautoka, Fiji, where 36 teams from Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand have gathered for an exciting week filled with competitive matches and cultural experiences. The festival is set to culminate in finals on Tuesday, promising thrilling netball action that is sure to create memorable moments for players and supporters alike.
Nick Rushton, the Co-Coordinator of the festival, emphasized Fiji’s appeal as a festival destination. He noted, “We host four festivals a year, and we’ve always returned to Fiji in December because it’s such a beautiful part of the world.” This reinforces the notion that the event not only highlights netball but also fosters cultural appreciation and lasting memories through the vibrant Fijian atmosphere.
The festival showcases various competition levels with four categories: U13, U15, U18, and Open, allowing young athletes from Yasawa and other regions of Fiji alongside international teams to demonstrate their skills. Early matches have already delivered exciting plays, including Shine On Queens’ impressive 19-3 victory over Aussie Hino and a close 19-17 battle between Lomaiviti Stars and Rockhampton Grammar.
Rushton pointed out that the netball festival encompasses more than just games. “The girls come for a nine-day tour, and four days are dedicated to netball. The rest of the time, they experience Fiji’s unique culture,” he explained. This approach not only enriches their sporting experience but also promotes cultural understanding among the participants.
Moreover, teams from Australia and New Zealand have contributed by bringing donations for local players, highlighting an ethos of generosity and community spirit within the festival. Rushton concluded by underscoring the festival’s broader goals: “We want the girls to understand different cultures and lifestyles. It’s not just about competition; it’s about interaction, learning, and building connections.”
This event not only emphasizes a healthy sporting culture but also fosters unity and friendship among nations, demonstrating that through sports, we can bridge cultural gaps and create lasting bonds.
Overall, the International Netball Festival is not only a celebration of sport but also a vibrant gathering that embodies the true spirit of camaraderie and cross-cultural exchange.
