The International Netball Festival has made its much-anticipated return to Lautoka, drawing an impressive gathering of 36 teams from Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand for an enriching week filled with competitive matches and cultural exchange. Set to culminate in finals on Tuesday, the festival is not only about thrilling netball match-ups but also about creating unforgettable experiences for both players and fans alike.
Nick Rushton, the International Netball Co-Coordinator, emphasized the allure of Fiji as a prime destination for the festival. “We host four festivals a year, and we’ve always returned to Fiji in December because it’s such a beautiful part of the world,” he noted. “Teams come to play netball and immerse themselves in the local culture, creating memories that last a lifetime.”
The festival showcases competitions in four different categories: U13, U15, U18, and Open. Teams from Yasawa and various regions across Fiji, alongside international clubs from Australia and New Zealand, are actively participating, leading to exhilarating moments on the court. Notably, in the opening matches, Shine On Queens showcased their dominance with a remarkable 19-3 victory over Aussie Hino, followed by an 18-11 win against Bradford Hotel Aussie Opens. Lomaiviti Stars faced a tightly contested match, narrowly losing to Rockhampton Grammar with a score of 19-17, while the Silverettes rebounded to defeat Burnie Diamonds 11-7.
Rushton pointed out that this festival extends beyond just sports. He mentioned, “The girls come for a nine-day tour, with four days dedicated to netball, while the rest of their time is spent experiencing Fiji’s unique culture.” This cultural immersion not only enhances their visit but enriches the players’ lives.
Additionally, teams from Australia and New Zealand have shown their generosity by bringing donations for local teams, highlighting the spirit of unity and community fostered by the festival. Rushton reinforced the importance of intercultural understanding, stating, “We want the girls to understand different cultures and lifestyles. It’s not just about competition; it’s about interaction, learning, and building connections.”
