The International Netball Festival has made its much-anticipated return to Lautoka, uniting 36 teams from Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand for a week filled with thrilling netball matches and cultural experiences. As the finals approach on Tuesday, both players and fans are eager for the excitement that unfolds on the court.
Nick Rushton, the International Netball Co-Coordinator, emphasized the allure of Fiji as the ideal backdrop for this festival. He noted, “We hold four festivals annually, and we always choose Fiji in December because it is an incredibly beautiful place.” This event not only fosters sporting competition but also allows teams to dive into the local culture, creating lasting memories.
The festival features multiple categories including U13, U15, U18, and Open divisions. Teams from Yasawa and various regions within Fiji are competing alongside international participants from Australia and New Zealand, contributing to exhilarating moments already witnessed in the matches.
In the opening games, Shine On Queens secured a decisive 19-3 victory against Aussie Hino, followed by another win over Bradford Hotel Aussie Opens with a score of 18-11. In a close match, Lomaiviti Stars experienced a tough loss to Rockhampton Grammar, coming in at 19-17, while the Silverettes rebounded with a win against Burnie Diamonds, finishing 11-7.
Beyond competitive sports, Rushton highlighted the festival’s broader mission. He stated, “The girls embark on a nine-day tour; four of those days are dedicated to netball, while the remaining time is spent exploring Fiji’s culture.” Additionally, Australian and New Zealand teams contributed donations to local teams, which has fostered a spirit of solidarity and generosity.
Rushton concluded, “We aim for the girls to grasp the significance of different cultures and lifestyles. This festival transcends competition; it’s about interaction, learning, and forming connections.”
