The netball community is deeply saddened by the passing of Wainikiti “Kiti” Bogidrau, who served as the former President of Netball Fiji and as the Oceania Regional Netball Director. Kiti passed away on Tuesday after a brief illness, leaving behind a powerful legacy within the sport.
Kiti was recognized for her exemplary dedication and leadership, inspiring countless players and administrators throughout Fiji and the wider Oceania region. Tributes from Oceania Netball, World Netball, and Tonga Netball underscore her influence as a mentor and trailblazer for women in sports. Oceania Netball Secretariat’s Nicola Jones honored Kiti as an inspiring leader who made a significant impact on the community, fueled by her passion for netball.
Salote Sisifa, CEO of Tonga Netball, shared heartfelt memories of Kiti as both a mentor and friend, expressing gratitude for her supportive guidance during her transition into leadership. Sisifa cherished their friendly rivalry on the court and the strong friendship they built off it, highlighting Kiti’s generous spirit that encouraged her peers to thrive.
World Netball also recognized Kiti’s extensive contributions over two decades in netball administration, emphasizing her pivotal role as President of Netball Fiji from 2010 to 2020 and her later positions on the Oceania Netball Board and the World Netball Board. The organization acknowledged her gentle demeanor and the thoughtful insights she provided that influenced significant decisions in the sport.
On a personal level, Kiti’s family described her as a devoted individual with strong faith who played an essential role in bringing everyone together. Her brother, Sevuloni Waqa, reflected on her loving nature and her anticipation for welcoming her first grandson soon. He emphasized her role in celebrating family milestones and her unwavering presence in their lives.
Prior to her impactful career in netball, Kiti made a name for herself in journalism. Colleague Iliesa Tora recalled her industriousness and collaborative spirit at The Fiji Times, noting that her journey from journalism to becoming a transformative leader in netball would inspire generations to come.
Kiti’s positive influence in netball and her contributions to empowering women and communities throughout Oceania will certainly be remembered. On behalf of the global netball community, World Netball expressed its condolences, honoring Kiti’s legacy and the profound impact she made.
Her funeral will take place next Friday, where she will be laid to rest at Nasinu cemetery.
