The netball community is in mourning following the passing of Wainikiti Bogidrau, a cherished administrator who left a significant mark on the sport. Bogidrau, who served as President of Netball Fiji from 2010 to 2020 and later as a Director representing the Oceania region on the World Netball Board, died at the age of 56.
World Netball lauded Bogidrau’s longstanding dedication, emphasizing her role as a pivotal figure in advancing netball not only in Fiji but throughout the Oceania region. Her commitment to the sport spanned over two decades, during which she forged many friendships and created impactful relationships within the netball community.
Tributes have poured in from various netball organizations globally, including heartfelt messages from unions in New Zealand, South Africa, Wales, Namibia, and beyond. Netball Fiji noted her intense passion for the game and described her energetic leadership style as one that inspired many. In particular, she was an advocate for increasing the competitiveness of Fiji’s national team, suggesting in 2013 that they needed more challenging matches to improve.
Bogidrau was instrumental in founding the “Friends of Netball” group in 2010, which successfully raised funds for the national team’s journey to the World Cup qualifiers. Netball Fiji President RubyAnn Sorovaki expressed profound gratitude for Bogidrau’s contributions, stating, “She will be dearly missed. Our condolences go out to her family during this sad time.”
Beyond her significant roles in netball, Bogidrau was involved with the Fiji National Provident Fund, where she was recognized for her drive and passion for various causes, including her family and spirituality.
