Netball Community Faces Heartbreak: Remembering Wainikiti Bogidrau

The netball community is in mourning following the unexpected death of Wainikiti Bogidrau, the Oceania Regional Director and former President of Netball Fiji. At the age of 57, Bogidrau’s contributions to netball spanned more than two decades, during which she held significant leadership positions that fostered growth in Fiji, the Oceania region, and globally.

Starting her career in netball administration over 20 years ago, she served as the President of Netball Fiji from 2010 to 2020. During her tenure, she became a source of inspiration, influencing many within the sport. In 2019, she was elected as the President of Oceania Netball, and shortly thereafter appointed to the World Netball Board as Director of the Oceania region. Her involvement was crucial for the development and direction of the sport.

In a statement, World Netball expressed that Bogidrau’s deep passion for netball was evident not only in her administrative efforts but also in her lifelong commitment as a player and spectator. They highlighted her lasting impact on the sport and shared their heartfelt condolences to her family and friends, acknowledging her gentleness and the wisdom she offered during her time with the organization.

In addition to her netball career, Bogidrau was a former journalist and public relations executive, showcasing her diverse talents and commitment to community engagement. She passed away after a brief illness and is scheduled to be laid to rest next Friday, with further arrangements to be announced.

Though her passing brings sadness, Bogidrau’s legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations of netball players, administrators, and fans. Her unwavering commitment to the game serves as a reminder of the positive impact one individual can have on a community and a sport.
