The Yasawa community celebrated a significant milestone with the official inauguration of the Yasawa Netball Association at Ratu Meli Memorial School in Nacula, Yasawa. The launch, which took place yesterday, was officiated by Jese Saukuru, the Minister for Youth and Sports, who commended the community’s dedication to sports and called upon the youth to seize the opportunities this association brings.
The establishment of the association stemmed from a request by Ratu Manasa Naikasowalu, the traditional leader, to promote netball as a central sport during the third leg of the Grassroots Fiji 7s tournament. This initiative aims to empower young women in the community, providing them with a new platform to play, compete, and grow in the sport.
Ratu Manasa emphasized the importance of the association for young women, urging them to take ownership and actively participate. This development marks a pivotal step forward for sports in the outer islands, enhancing opportunities for girls in Yasawa to represent their district while fostering a spirit of empowerment and inclusivity in athletics.
This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to promote women’s participation in sports throughout Fiji, reflected in recent successes like the Yasawa Saints winning the inaugural Sports Well League Tag Championship. This tournament highlighted female athletes’ achievements and emphasized the importance of gender inclusivity in sports. The growing recognition and support for women in sports provide a hopeful glimpse into a future where female athletes can thrive and achieve significant milestones.
As the Yasawa Netball Association begins its journey, it promises to not only nurture local talent but also to play a crucial role in empowering the next generation of female athletes in the region. The community’s investment in sports is a commendable step toward brighter opportunities and increased participation in athletics, ultimately promoting a more equitable landscape for sports in Fiji.
