The Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) has welcomed a new interim president, Lawrence Kumar, who was elected during a special general meeting in Nadi. The leadership change marks a critical point for the chamber, which has been grappling with financial difficulties and serious allegations of financial mismanagement. Kumar, the former chief executive officer of the Nadi Town Council, has expressed a strong desire to lead the organization towards accountability and renewal.
Kumar highlighted the chamber’s challenges over the past 15 to 16 years, noting that many members have distanced themselves due to stagnant leadership and ineffective governance. He emphasized the need for evolution within the organization, stating, “We have not really evolved, and the chamber seems to have done the same thing over and over again.”
In addressing the financial issues publicly acknowledged by the chamber, Kumar outlined plans for a forensic audit of the organization’s accounts to identify past financial mismanagement. He affirmed the importance of transparency, stating that findings from the audit would be reported to authorities, including the Fiji Police and the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) if necessary.
This transition comes on the heels of a vote of no confidence that ousted long-serving president Dr. Ram Raju, who has come under scrutiny for alleged financial mismanagement, including the failure to conduct annual general meetings since 2021. Raju intends to challenge the claims and has sought legal advice about the allegations.
Previous discussions surrounding the NCCI’s governance have showcased a growing demand for accountability and effective leadership, not just within the chamber but across Fiji’s broader governance landscape. Kumar’s leadership could symbolize an opportunity for revitalization within the organization, potentially benefitting local businesses and enhancing community engagement.
As the NCCI embarks on this new chapter, there is an overarching sense of hope that the changes in leadership may lead to improved practices, transparency, and renewed trust among its members and the local business community. This pivotal moment allows for the integration of fresh ideas and strategies that could address existing challenges and foster a more dynamic chamber moving forward.
