Allegations of financial mismanagement have led to significant unrest within the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI), culminating in a special general meeting called to discuss these serious claims. Shalendra Prasad, the chamber’s secretary, has advocated for the resignation of long-serving president Dr. Ram Raju and council members, citing a failure to conduct annual general meetings since 2021 and alleged improper handling of finances during 2021-2024.

In an email to Dr. Raju and chamber members, Prasad outlined accusations of poor record-keeping and misappropriation of funds. He indicated that there were no financial records for income received, particularly from membership renewals and business forums organized by NCCI. Prasad’s concerns about Raju’s leadership have raised questions regarding the president’s re-election and the overall governance of NCCI.

Dr. Raju, who has been in leadership for over a decade, responded firmly, describing the claims as defamatory and highlighting a lack of professionalism from Prasad. He expressed disappointment and sadness over the discord within the organization, emphasizing that Prasad’s allegations came without prior discussion at board meetings, which could indicate ulterior motives.

The special AGM, scheduled for 6 PM yesterday, sought to address these allegations head-on. It represents a pivotal moment for the NCCI, as it attempts to regain trust among its members and reinstate a culture of accountability and transparency. This situation reflects broader governance trends in Fiji, where calls for accountability and renewed leadership are growing more prominent.

Interestingly, prior articles indicate that these events may lead to a positive shift in governance. In a recent election, the NCCI has already witnessed significant leadership changes that may enhance its operational integrity and responsiveness to member needs. New leadership could bring invigorated ideas and better practices, thereby strengthening the chamber’s role in supporting local businesses.

Despite the turmoil, there remains a chance for rejuvenation within the NCCI, and stakeholders are hopeful that this experience will lead to more systematic governance and accountability in the organization’s future.
