Mark Nawaqanitawase is optimistic about stepping into the role left vacant by Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii at the Sydney Roosters. Transitioning from rugby union, where he primarily played as a winger or fullback, Nawaqanitawase has been preparing to take on one of the toughest positions in rugby league—centre. He was recently named to start at left centre in a trial match against St George Illawarra, while also seeing time at fullback in the second half, although he is not expected to challenge for the No.1 jersey against captain James Tedesco.
Roosters coach Trent Robinson has taken a calculated risk by positioning Nawaqanitawase in the centres, emphasizing the importance of understanding defensive strategies to prevent being caught out—a task that is critical in the NRL’s wrestle-dominated defense. Nawaqanitawase has dedicated his pre-season to honing his skills in this role, building confidence in his decision-making and handling physicality.
He pointed out, “Robbo is a big defensive guy, that’s what we build on here at the Roosters,” underscoring the team’s commitment to defense. With this preparation, he feels ready for the challenges that lie ahead, including the expectation of increased attacking pressure coming his way.
In the backdrop, the Roosters also have young talent Robert Toia being considered as a potential right centre fill-in for Joey Manu, underscoring the competition within the squad. Nawaqanitawase brings experience to the table despite his relative inexperience in league, having only played a handful of professional games after transitioning from rugby union, where he notably performed well, even scoring a try during a NSW Cup match shortly after his arrival at the Roosters.
The team’s veteran figures, including back-rower Angus Crichton and winger Daniel Tupou, will provide valuable support for Nawaqanitawase as he navigates this pivotal stage of his career in the NRL. His adaptation process is further facilitated by an increase in grappling sessions designed to equip him for the physical demands of his new position.
Reflecting on his adjustments, he praised Tedesco for the complexities involved in the fullback role, acknowledging the skill required to excel in that position. This diverse experience may help Nawaqanitawase flourish in league, allowing him to improve his game further as he establishes his place in the side.
As the Roosters gear up for their upcoming trial against Newcastle, which will see the return of their starring players, Nawaqanitawase’s story highlights a narrative of growth and adaptation, fostering hope for both him and the Roosters as they aim for success in the league.
