Former Wallabies winger Mark Nawaqanitawase is likely to be included in the Fiji Bati squad for the upcoming Pacific Championship in October. This suggestion was made by Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata during an interview on Saturday night.
Kativerata mentioned, “So far we’ve been talking to a lot of players including Mark. He is keen to come on board this year, which is good for his development as a rugby league player.” Nawaqanitawase, who is originally from Nalebaleba in Nadroga with his mother from Australia, previously played for the Waratahs in the Super Rugby Pacific competition and represented Australia in last year’s Rugby World Cup. Prior to his transition to rugby league, he competed for Australia at the Paris Olympic Games, where they were defeated by Fiji in the semi-finals.
It was announced on December 7 of last year that he would join the Sydney Roosters in the National Rugby League (NRL). Kativerata emphasized the importance of physical and mental readiness in rugby league, mentioning that Nawaqanitawase’s involvement with the Fiji Bati would be beneficial for his development in the sport.
The Fiji Bati will take on Papua New Guinea at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on October 19, followed by a match against the Cook Islands on October 26 at the same venue. This provides a crucial opportunity for the team to earn the Pacific Bowl and compete in a promotion/relegation match in Sydney, Australia, on November 10.
Kativerata acknowledged the challenge ahead as he aims to lead the Bati to success. He stated, “Our target this year is about winning. Last year we fell short, and the boys know what is required to be in the squad. We are looking to build this team up every year in preparation for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.” He also mentioned discussions with top players such as Tui Kamikamica, Api Koroisau, and Viliame Kikau to strengthen the team for the qualifiers.
When asked about potential pairings in the halves, Kativerata highlighted Kurt Donohue’s good performance last year, as well as Joe Lovodua, who is currently excelling in the Super League in Europe. He noted that options would include Jahream Bula, although Bula’s wedding date coincides with the match against Papua New Guinea, which may open up a spot for Lovodua.
The coach stressed the need for the team to stay focused in order to secure wins against Papua New Guinea and the Cook Islands, aiming to qualify for the promotion relegation final.
In addition, Kativerata announced community outreach efforts to educate children and young people about the dangers of drug use. He expressed concern over declining statistics related to drug use and HIV and stressed the importance of addressing these issues. The team plans to visit various communities, including Savusavu, Nadonumai, and Nabua, to promote healthy living and discourage drug use.
A press conference hosted by Fiji National Rugby League officials and Vodafone is scheduled for Friday to reveal the Bati and Fiji Bulikula (national women’s rugby league) teams.
