Nawaqanitawase Set to Join Fiji Bati for October Showdown?

Former Wallabies winger Mark Nawaqanitawase is expected to join the Fiji Bati squad for the upcoming Pacific Championship in October. This announcement came from Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata during an interview.

Kativerata shared that discussions have occurred with multiple players, including Nawaqanitawase, who showed enthusiasm for participating this year, a move he believes will aid in the player’s development in rugby league.

Nawaqanitawase, who is originally from Nalebaleba, Bemana in Nadroga and has ties to Australia through his mother, previously played for the Waratahs in the Super Rugby Pacific competition and represented Australia at last year’s Rugby World Cup. Before transitioning to rugby league, he competed for Australia in the Paris Olympic Games, where they were defeated by Fiji in the semi-finals. On December 7 of last year, it was announced that he would sign with the Sydney Roosters in the National Rugby League (NRL).

Kativerata emphasized the physical and mental demands of rugby league, highlighting the importance of Nawaqanitawase’s involvement in the Fiji Bati for his development. Fiji Bati will face Papua New Guinea at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on October 19, followed by a match against the Cook Islands on October 26. This tournament provides an opportunity for the Bati to secure the Pacific Bowl and earn a chance to compete in a promotion/relegation match in Sydney, Australia, on November 10.

The coach acknowledged the significant challenge ahead in striving for victory. The team’s goal this year is to win after a disappointing performance last year, and he believes the players understand what is required to be selected for the squad. Kativerata aims to enhance the team annually in preparation for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.

He mentioned ongoing discussions with prominent players like Tui Kamikamica, Api Koroisau, and Viliame Kikau to strengthen the team for the qualifiers. When asked about the combination in the halves, he noted the presence of Kurt Donohue, who performed well last year, and Joe Lovodua, who is excelling in the Super League. Kativerata is evaluating options, including Jahream Bula, though his wedding may affect his availability for the match against PNG.

The Bati hopes to focus their efforts on achieving victories against PNG and the Cook Islands to qualify for the promotion-relegation final. On Friday, Fiji National Rugby League officials and Vodafone will hold a press conference to announce the teams for the Bati and the Fiji Bulikula (women’s national rugby league team).

In addition, Kativerata revealed that the team plans to engage with communities across the country, promoting awareness among children and youth about the dangers of drugs. He expressed his concern over the declining discussions around these critical issues. The Bati aims to spread positive messages and encourage healthy living, visiting places such as Savusavu, Nadonumai, and Nabua to connect with young audiences on this topic.
