Nawaqanitawase on the Brink of Joining Fiji Bati for Pacific Championship

Former Wallabies star winger Mark Nawaqanitawase is set to join the Fiji Bati squad for the Pacific Championship in October, according to a hint from head coach Wise Kativerata. During an interview on Saturday, Kativerata expressed enthusiasm about Nawaqanitawase’s potential involvement, stating, “He is keen to come on board this year, which is good for his development as a rugby league player.”

Nawaqanitawase, who hails from Nalebaleba, Bemana in Nadroga with roots in Australia, showcased his talent playing for the Waratahs in the Super Rugby Pacific before representing Australia in last year’s Rugby World Cup. He also participated in the Paris Olympic Games, where Australia faced defeat against Fiji in the semi-finals. In December, it was announced that he would join the Sydney Roosters in the National Rugby League.

Kativerata emphasized the importance of physical and mental readiness in rugby league, noting that Nawaqanitawase’s participation would aid his league development. The Fiji Bati will face Papua New Guinea at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on October 19 and will also play against the Cook Islands on October 26. The tournament offers a chance to win the Pacific Bowl and set up for a promotion/relegation match in Sydney on November 10.

Kativerata recognizes the challenges ahead, stating, “Our target this year is about winning. Last year we fell short, and the boys know what is required to be in the squad.” The coaching staff is also in discussions with key players like Tui Kamikamica, Api Koroisau, and Viliame Kikau to strengthen the team for the qualifiers.

Regarding team composition, Kativerata mentioned Kurt Donohue’s good performance last year and acknowledged Joe Lovodua’s success in the Super League. He is contemplating options for the halves, including Jahream Bula, although Bula’s upcoming wedding may influence lineup choices.

The focus will be on securing victories against PNG and the Cook Islands to qualify for the crucial promotion-relegation final. Meanwhile, Fiji National Rugby League officials and Vodafone are set to hold a press conference on Friday to announce the Bati and the national women’s rugby league team, Fiji Bulikula.

In addition to their sporting commitments, the Bati will engage with communities to educate youth about the dangers of drugs. Kativerata highlighted the need to address these pressing issues, sharing concerns about declining numbers in drug and HIV-related cases. The team plans to visit areas such as Savusavu, Nadonumai, and Nabua to encourage healthy living and drug-free lifestyles among children.
