Nawaka Blues Makes History with Championship Win

The Nawaka Blues, coached by Vikash Chand, have made history as the first team to secure a spot in the Fiji FA National Club Championship 2024 set for the end of the year. This achievement came after they defeated Gandhi Lionz 2-0 in the Sher Ali-sponsored Nadi Football Premier Local League final, held at the Korovuto College grounds on Monday night. Despite having only ten players, the Blues managed to clinch the victory with goals from Mohammed Shalmeen and Shazil Valentine, each scoring in different halves.

Key players for the Blues included William Valentine, Christopher Kumar, goalkeeper Samu Tamanisau, Shafeem Buksh, Mohammed Shalmeen, Sahil Valentine, and Mohammed Ayman. Coach Singh expressed pride in the team’s accomplishment, stating, “We aim to make the cut for the NCC, the ultimate dream for all teams, and we did it as a team.”

On the opposing side, Gandhi Lionz showcased talent through players such as Ame Votoniu, Christopher Chand, Vishant Reddy, and Ashneel Singh. In the semi-finals, the Blues edged out Army FC in a penalty shootout, winning 3-2, while Gandhi Lionz narrowly defeated DCA ONE with a score of 2-1.

Lawrence Kumar, a member of the Nadi football board, praised the completion of the local league and congratulated the Blues on their success. “Blues will represent Nadi FA in the NCC. We hope they can bring back the glory days like Tanoa FC did,” he stated. He also acknowledged the efforts of all teams, officials, and supporters throughout the season, expressing optimism for the coming year.

In the senior division final, Girni FC celebrated their first-ever title with a 1-0 victory over DCA II. Girni FC secured their spot in the final with a 1-0 win against Korovuto, while DCA II also won their semi-final match against Barara FC by the same scoreline.
