Just five months after the RFNS Puamau ran aground in the Fulaga Passage, its replacement, the RFNS Timo, has experienced damage after a docking incident on Thursday while attempting to berth at Walu Bay Navy Pier. The vessel was being brought in from Australia by sailors from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Naval Division.
The RFNS Timo is a gift from the Australian government, designed to replace the decommissioned RFNS Puamau, which sustained an $18 million loss when it struck a reef in Fulaga waters earlier this year. During the recent docking operation, RFNS Timo incurred minor damage to its port-side stern above the waterline.
Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy, Commodore Humphrey Tawake, explained that the incident was influenced by a combination of strong winds and limited space for docking, worsened by the presence of commercial vessels nearby. Commodore Tawake also did not rule out the possibility of unprofessional conduct leading to the mishap, mentioning concerns regarding the condition of several crew members at the time.
In response to the incident, individuals allegedly involved in unprofessional conduct have been detained, and a formal investigation is underway to clarify the circumstances and implement necessary improvements. Navy engineers acted swiftly, conducting an assessment and beginning repairs within 24 hours of the incident, which are now nearly complete, ensuring RFNS Timo will soon return to full operational capability.
Commodore Tawake asserted the Navy’s commitment to reviewing operational protocols and enhancing crew training to prevent similar occurrences in the future. He expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the Australian Government under the Vuvale Partnership, underlining the importance of continuous improvement in maritime operations.
Despite the challenges faced, he reassured that the structural integrity of the RFNS Timo remains intact, and the vessel is expected to be fully operational again shortly.
This incident highlights the complexities of maritime operations and reinforces the importance of ongoing training, professionalism, and adherence to protocols within the Navy. It also serves as a reminder of the resilience and commitment of the Republic of Fiji Navy to overcome challenges and ensure the safety and effectiveness of its operations.
